Suspended From Twitter (Again)

image

Those who follow me on Twitter (@Gspellchecker) may have noticed my account is currently suspended. I am yet to receive a reason from the powers that be, but I have filed an appeal for it to be lifted whilst I wait. Going from past experience, the turnaround for an official response could be anything between 24 hours to 30 days.

This isn’t the first time I have been suspended. The last time was January 2015, news of which even made The Independent newspaper.

An open letter I blogged back then detailed my thoughts on what I think is going on with Twitter’s suspension process. Unfortunately, not much has changed except to say that I think Twitter’s approach to such matters has worsened rather than improved in the intervening years.

Michael Nugent Tackles @Demos’ ‘Islamophobia’ Report

image

Last week, I reported on the flawed research into online ‘Islamophobia’ carried out by the think tank ‘Demos’. The findings of this report painted an alarming picture of hate towards Muslims on the social networking site Twitter. The Demos report was spread far and wide unquestioningly by countless media outlets including the BBC.

I highlighted an excellent response from Benjamin Jones of the National Secular Society which detailed the unhelpful nature of the term ‘Islamophobia’ and Demos’ inconsistent criteria for classifying it.

Maajid Nawaz V Talib Kweli

image

It’s been an interesting day or two for Maajid Nawaz of the anti-extremism think tank Quilliam. We learned via Nawaz’s Facebook page that he’d had a run in with a number of Islamist thugs in London:

image

Keep in mind, Nawaz is a Muslim who is a staunch opponent of Islamic extremism and spends his time championing human rights and secularism for all. The fact that doing so in 2016’s London from within the Muslim community carries such risks demonstrates that the problem is worse than most care to understand.

Demos’ Flawed research Into ‘Islamophobia’ On Twitter

image

The ‘backlash narrative’ appears to be alive and well in Britain this week. As is common following the mass slaughter of mostly non-Muslims by Muslims in Europe, we are asked to consider just how bad a time this will create for the real victims here – Muslims. This callous self interest is particularly nauseating, given it often begins whilst the bodies are still warm.

What Are Some People Saying About The Orlando Shooting In Arabic?

image

Full information is yet to be known about the tragic shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. Early reports suggest that Omar Mateen killed 50 people and injured over 50 others in what appears to be an attack motivated by Islamic fundamentalism.

Thanks to the good work of twitter user @ahmedaa1k, I was able to show you what was being said in Arabic by some people about atheists a while back. The same twitter user has also translated some of the Arabic language responses to the Orlando shooting. It’s not good news either.
