Journalist Mona Eltahaway Labels Me A ‘Misogynist Prick’

My patience is wearing thin with those who assume to tell people which causes they can’t support or have an opinion on due to their location, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender.

It seems a form of identity politics where it’s more important to be seen ‘fighting the good fight’ than it is to actually win the war. It’s going to take more than every woman on this planet to achieve gender equality for instance. Excluding men is counterproductive because if men are the problem they need to be part of the solution too.

There will be many valuable voices in any movement, some with relevant, direct experiences and some without – but it’s going to take more than one particular clique, or a singular political persuasion to make progress on the big issues of our day. This is why sensible allies are vital.

Regardless of whether they have a personal link to the issue, sensible allies can also serve to support, promote and amplify good ideas and challenge the bad ones. And that’s a vital component of influencing changes to attitudes and behaviour. There’s nothing about this view in my mind that prevents one from listening to people directly affected also.

Tortured For Being An Atheist. I Interview Waleed Al-Husseini

image

Waleed Al-Husseini is a Palestinian ex-Muslim. He fell afoul of the Palestinian authorities after blogging critically about Islam in 2010. For this ‘crime’, he was jailed and tortured. He managed to flee to France where he currently resides. He details these experiences in his French language book: ‘Blasphémateur’.

I initially recorded a conversation between us which I hoped to release on The Godless Spellchecker Podcast. Due to a combination of poor audio and a language barrier, I felt it would better serve Waleed’s story to arrange a written interview instead.

Video Of ISOC Islamists Disrupting & Intimidating At University Talk

image

I recently wrote about Goldsmiths Islamic Society’s (ISOC) attempts to have human rights campaigner Maryam Namazie disinvited from a speaking event organised by The Atheist, Secularist and Humanist Society (ASH). When they didn’t get their way, members of ISOC simply turned up to the talk and initiated a campaign of disruption and intimidation instead. Despite the group comprising of thuggish, male Islamists attempting to silence and intimidate a female minority, The Goldsmiths Feminist Society, in a display of utter moral confusion took the decision to release a statement in solidarity with ISOC. Full video of the event is now available here, which I urge you to watch, however the full video is nearly two hours long, so I’ve taken the liberty of editing it down to highlight the main instances of thuggish behaviour and disruption from ISOC members:
